Challenge

Our client, a healthcare app development company from Belgium (name under NDA), had been collaborating with numerous healthcare organizations and identified the need for a mobile patient diary app. Their vision was to develop a solution that could help prevent re-hospitalization by ensuring careful documentation of the treatment process. The app was intended to serve as an electronic health record, where both patients and medical staff could input vital health indicators such as pulse, weight, blood pressure, daily activity, medications taken, and test results. By collecting and tracking all treatment-related data, the app would provide doctors with a comprehensive overview of a patient’s progress and activities.

Our development team was selected after a thorough evaluation process. We were chosen because we met the client’s specific requirements, had extensive experience in the healthcare industry, and demonstrated effective work processes and robust testing methodologies. Additionally, the project involved technologies closely tied to Microsoft, and our deep expertise in .NET development played a key role in the client’s decision.

We were entrusted with creating a cross-platform mobile app using Xamarin, targeting Android, iOS, and UWP platforms. One of the key prerequisites was ensuring that all medical data would be stored in FHIR format, a standard that is essential for seamless data exchange in healthcare systems.

Solution

The Patient Diary solution was developed as a cross-platform mobile application using Xamarin, targeting Android, iOS, and UWP platforms. The development process was carried out in two stages: the first focused on implementing the core functionality and enabling manual data entry, while the second introduced an auto-population feature that fetched patient data from external APIs. The app stores health records in the FHIR format, ensuring interoperability and compliance with healthcare data standards. Additionally, the app utilizes Azure Active Directory B2C for secure, customizable authentication, allowing federated login options for healthcare organizations.

Educational Resources

The app includes a "Required Education" feature that ensures patients receive all relevant information before treatment. Educational resources such as articles, videos, and presentations are stored in Azure Blob Storage and synchronized based on a schedule. The app tracks the user’s progress in viewing the content and allows resources to be marked as optional for download.

Health Records

The records include a basic questionnaire capturing the patient’s overall feeling and general notes, along with vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and blood sugar. The app also tracks a medications list, laboratory test results, and physical activity. All of this information is stored in a Health Journal, with each entry corresponding to a specific day, allowing both patients and healthcare providers to easily review and assess the patient’s progress and health status.

FHIR Data Exchange

To facilitate seamless data exchange, the app stores all healthcare-related data in the FHIR format, ensuring compatibility with other systems. This ensures efficient and secure communication between healthcare providers while maintaining high standards for data security and privacy.

Activity Tracker

The app features an activity tracker that monitors and logs the patient’s physical activities, such as steps, exercise, sleep, and sports. The data is automatically captured and stored, providing insights into the patient's daily routine and overall health.

Health Journal

Each patient’s data is organized into a Health Journal, where every entry corresponds to a specific day. The journal includes vitals, test results, and activity data, providing a daily overview that can be visualized to track progress over time. This enables healthcare providers to easily assess the patient’s condition and treatment adherence.

Tenant-Based Solution

The app is designed to be used by multiple healthcare organizations, with a tenant-based solution that ensures each organization can have its own separate instance of the app. This includes setting up distinct Azure Active Directory B2C instances for patients and hospital staff, which guarantees secure authentication and customized access for different users.
